Readers' Theater

Readers' Theater is a great way to improve fluency with students, increase motivation and self confidence, intonation, phrasing, rate, expression, comprehension and fun! Re-reading is an important strategy to use when needing to improve fluency. Try it in class and see how the students react. I suggest mixed grouping as lower level students need to hear and see fluency modeled correctly. I also suggest reading the scripts to the students first, then assigning parts and have them practice. I go over the oral reading fluency before this and use that as well. Students then get to anonymously nominate the best speaker per scene by putting their heads down, closing their eyes, and voting as the teacher calls out the names of the students. Students love to hear their names called and acknowledgment of their good work.

Reading Workshop

The beginning of a new school year often involves discussion and/or modeling of procedures, behaviors, and classroom expectations.  Reading Workshop also requires this same earnest and intentional effort as we establish norms for the classroom to ensure success for each student.  Building a "reading community" in which students are independent is more likely when routines and procedures are purposeful and meaningful to students.  Below are links to a variety of primary and intermediate examples of Reading Workshop mini-lessons with an emphasis on direct instruction of those procedures students need to have in place before they can truly begin to grow as readers.
