Books Online

There are free sites online where you can read books K-12. You just need to know where to go. In an age where we struggle to get kids to read and put the video games away, this might be a solution. Also, instead of kids being bored on those long car rides, or playing video games, give them the Kindle, Nook, iPod, iPad or tablet and read away!

Read a Book, Give a Book site. This sites features weekly picture books.  http://www.wegivebooks.org/

Contractions

Contractions are errors that I see quite frequently in all grades. Students tend to memorize them for the test and then forget about them and write them incorrectly in context or even on future state tests.  These games are a fun way to periodically remind students about the basic contractions.

Writing Books and Comics

The Comic Creator invites students to compose their own comic strips for a variety of contexts (prewriting, pre- and postreading activities, response to literature, and so on). The organizers focus on the key elements of comic strips by allowing students to choose backgrounds, characters, and props, as well as to compose related dialogue (shown at left). This versatile tool can be used by students from kindergarten through high school, for purposes ranging from learning to write dialogue to an in-depth study of a formerly neglected genre. The tool is easy to use, made even easier with the Comic Strip Planning Sheet, a printable PDF that comic creators can use to draft and revise their work before creating and printing their final comics. After completing their comic, students have the ability to print out and illustrate their final versions for feedback and assessment.http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/comic/

Typing Games/Practice

Whether we agree with it or not, handwriting print and cursive will soon be replaced with only keyboarding. Students will email, text and blog their homework and classwork. If you are an adult, think about how often you write a handwritten note at work. Even now, every month I see more and more students carrying Kindles and iPads instead of books. With that knowledge, keyboarding can start as early as preschool. Here are some free, online games to help students get faster and faster  on the keyboard.

Picking A Just Right Book- Strategies and Leveling Books

Too many children are growing up not liking to read. Anthologies contain good literature, but they do not help students fall in love with books. Every student in a grade is also not at the same reading level and do not have the same interests. That is why it is important to teach students, starting as early as pre-school and continuing thru their school years, how to pick a just right book for them. Students who know how to find books that they like will be life long readers, not just while they are in school. They will read whole series and know which authors they love, and which ones they don't. They will know what strategies to use when reading non-fiction and what strategies to use for fiction. They will question, infer and connect to any text they read, not just when they are told to.

How do parents learn how to help students select just right books? Check out the following links. In addition, there are a lot of suggested book lists by reading level and genre to help select books for your student or set up a home reading library.

Beginning Letter Sounds, Letter Recognition and CVC Words

One cannot learn to read if you do not know recognize letters and letter sounds. A lot of times I have seen students in the primary grades and beyond that struggle with reading and through I basic assessment I find that they are missing certain letters and sounds. That can make reading and writing very difficult. That is why it is never too early to start learning your letters and sounds. I have heard parents say that they have plenty of time in school to learn and that they should be playing more in the early grades. The fact is, if a student is struggling with their reading my the third grade, that student is at serious risk to continue to struggle the remainder of their education and beyond. Why set your child up for that. Start early. You don't have to do drill after drill of the letters. Take them grocery shopping and have them tell you the letters on the cereal boxes or cheese wrappers. Sing the ABC song as a rap or jazz number while you take a bath, jump rope or swing on a swing. Buy beginner readers from Scholastic or library book sales and start reading to your children before they are even born. It is never too early to start. Have no fear though, here are great online game sites that help students learn their letters and sounds!
