Beginning Letter Sounds, Letter Recognition and CVC Words

One cannot learn to read if you do not know recognize letters and letter sounds. A lot of times I have seen students in the primary grades and beyond that struggle with reading and through I basic assessment I find that they are missing certain letters and sounds. That can make reading and writing very difficult. That is why it is never too early to start learning your letters and sounds. I have heard parents say that they have plenty of time in school to learn and that they should be playing more in the early grades. The fact is, if a student is struggling with their reading my the third grade, that student is at serious risk to continue to struggle the remainder of their education and beyond. Why set your child up for that. Start early. You don't have to do drill after drill of the letters. Take them grocery shopping and have them tell you the letters on the cereal boxes or cheese wrappers. Sing the ABC song as a rap or jazz number while you take a bath, jump rope or swing on a swing. Buy beginner readers from Scholastic or library book sales and start reading to your children before they are even born. It is never too early to start. Have no fear though, here are great online game sites that help students learn their letters and sounds!
